Tributes in gold or cotton were due every 3 months, and Indians who did not comply had their hands chopped off. Indians were hunted for sport, murdered for dog food, and given to officers as sex slaves. Columbus's role in setting up the system is never mentioned. The new world was not populated by sparsely-scattered tribes, but by as many as 100 million Indians, which were systematically wiped out by one plague after another, most introduced purposely. Eight million in Haiti alone were reduced to 200 within 60 years - now seen as history's first documented genocide. Columbus's main reason for traveling to the new world to find gold, and he was responsible for killing, torturing and enslaving natives by the millions. Here's one example:Īlmost everyone knew the world was round before 1492. This was a great book! The first two-thirds gives example after example of the many lies, omissions, and half-truths found in American high school history books, and the last third speculates why this has happened. (clicking on the title will link you to a reader's journal/discussion of the book) If you are interested in the topic of education and how it is being inseminated to our children through textbook censorship and abridgement of the facts, then I would recommend Diane Ratvitch’s “The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn” for a more balanced examination of this issue. For this reader, it made for just the kind of boring recitation of skewed political propaganda the author claims to be rallying against. His strong opinions on historical events may cause some readers to overlook his message on education. Having said all that, however, I found Loewen was overplaying the “politically correct” hand himself, replacing the conservative, Euro-centric rhetoric with his own overtly socialist and liberal leanings. When we present our youth the world through rose-colored glasses, where no controversial subjects arise, it no doubt causes them to be ill prepared for the real world that exists beyond the classroom. I, personally, was interested to learn that not one of the twelve textbooks described the geopolitical implications of Christopher Columbus’s encounter with the Americans none mention that Columbus was the first to send slaves across the Atlantic. I completely agree with the author’s basic belief that American students are getting short-changed when we present only the PC-version of our country’s heritage, not to mention the fact that this watered down presentation only serves to bore them all to tears (students consider history to be “the most irrelevant” and “boring” of all the 21 subjects commonly taught in school). By critiquing 12 highly used American History textbooks, the author successfully presents several topics which they currently address, and uncovers the alleged omissions and distortions. Loewen’s premise is that history textbooks have been presented to portray a slanted, optimistic and patriotic “dumbed-down” view of America, because this suits the needs of the conservative white people who sit on the textbook adoption boards. “Lies My Teacher Told Me” is for anyone who has ever fallen asleep in history class." I originally picked this up several years ago because the blurb on the back cover appealed to me: I tested both coils with 70/30 and 80/20 3 mg juices and found that they kept up without a struggle. These new coils have an interesting design, with the wick holes being significantly cut down-in fact, I wasn’t sure that the holes are exposed enough to allow proper wicking. Fortunately, it takes 30 minutes to enter standby mode for the DRAGs, so that shouldn’t be an issue too often.īoth devices come with a 0.3-ohm coil (check here for more info) while the DRAG X also packs a 0.15-ohm mesh coil rated for 60-80 watts, and the DRAG S a 0.2-ohm mesh coil rated for 40-60 watts. And similar to the Vincis, both the X and the S will go to standby mode if left unused for a while, and you will need to press fire to wake them up. The puff counter shows the number of puffs for the last 14 days and all key combos are basically the same. Pressing all three buttons at the same time enters the clock interface (keep fire pressed for 2 seconds to exit).Įxcluding the scoring mode, which doesn’t allow any interaction anyway, the rest is very similar to the Vinci line.Pressing fire and up together locks the device (you can’t fire it or change wattage when locked).Pressing fire and down together resets your daily puff number.Clicking fire while in the puff interface shows chipset info.Pressing up and down together enters the PUFF interface (keep fire pressed for 2 seconds to exit).Press up or down to adjust the wattage.Three clicks of the fire button to change between “smart” and “RBA” mode on the X (the S allows you to swap between button press and auto-draw mode too).Five clicks of the power button turn the device on and off.Other than that, you get your wattage, voltage, resistance, and a battery meter on the screen. All in all, the DRAGs pass the build quality and design test with flying colors. Plus, the built-in mouthpiece is rounded this time around, and feels just like one of these large 510s made for DL vaping. The pods come with a much better plug than the flimsy one that came with the Vinci pods, and the magnets are super strong. It feels high quality, opens easily, and clicks in place securely. Outside of size and weight, the only difference between the X and the S is that the X has a battery cap. As for weight, the DRAG S at around 150 grams is significantly heavier than the original Vinci, while the 165 grams of the DRAG X are close to the 175 grams of the Vinci X. And with their shape and reduced width, the form factor is great on both devices. At 95 mm x 32.5 mm x 28 mm, the Drag X is 8 mm taller than the DRAG S, and a bit taller than your average 18650 mod. Color me impressed!īoth devices are a bit smaller than their equivalents in the Vinci line, and have a better hand feel due to their rounded shape. Seriously, even the airflow adjustment system looks awesome-and unlike the Vincis, the airflow is fully adjustable on the DRAGs. The transparent PCTG material used on the pods is a great fit for the mod and kinda looks like one of those sexy aftermarket transparent RDA caps. The screen is large, colorful, and bright and wattage is visible even under direct sunlight. And after all, that’s one of the things the DRAG line is known for. Maybe some won’t love the large DRAG branding up front, but it blends better than it does on the mods. I’m not 100% sure that Voopoo uses real leather on them, but it sure looks realistic to me. From the leather textures and details, to the fabric texture of the “mashup” edition and its original Aegis vibes, the DRAG X and S are some of the best looking and most well-built devices I have held in a long time. Let’s start with aesthetics: both these kits are stunning! I received the Mashup and Retro editions, and I honestly can’t even find one thing to fault them from a design perspective. Others again have thought that they could find in Baphomet a corruption of Mahomet (Mohammed), and hence they have asserted that the Templars had been perverted from their religious faith by the Saracens, with whom they had so much intercourse, sometimes as foes and sometimes as friends. Of this statement he offers no other historical testimony than the Articles of Accusation, themselves devoid of proof, but through which the Templars were made the victims of the jealousy of the Pope and the avarice of the King of France. From this gratuitous assumption he deduces his theory, set forth even m the very title of his work, that the Templars were convicted, by their own monuments, of being guilty as Gnostics and Ophites of apostasy, idolatry, and impurity. He derived the name from the Greek words, Baph (βάπτισμα) – baptism, and μhtis (σοφία) – wisdom, and thence supposed that it represented the admission of the initiated into the secret mysteries of the Order. Von Hammer, a bitter enemy of the Templars, in his book entitled The Mystery of Baphomet Revealed, revived this old accusation, and attached to the Baphomet an impious signification. Item quod ipsi per singulas provincias habeant idola: videlicet capita quorum aliqua habebant tres facies, et alia unum: et aliqua cranium humanum habebant.Īlso, that in all of the provinces they have idols, namely, heads, of which some had three faces, some one, and some had a human skull. The forty-second of the charges preferred against them by Pope Clement is in these words: The imaginary idol, or, rather, symbol which the Knights Templars were accused of employing in their mystic rights. That can be remedied by spending Nook Miles to get a plane ticket to visit a randomly-generated island. The type of fruit that appears on your island is random, for instance, and there will only ever be one kind at the start. If you care about them, you can re-roll - by which we mean, you can start over and delete your save to have another shot at what you want. There are some elements of your island that are random. Things that won't be impacted by your island choice, but will differ anyway You'll share that one island - so choose carefully. The bad news is you cannot change the name of your island and it is strictly one island per Nintendo Switch, even if more than one player is playing the game. Similarly, you can also change ledges and rivers when you unlock terraforming tools later on. So if you make a mistake or your priorities change, you can rejig. The good news is that almost everything that you manually place - houses, shops, items and so on - can be moved later on, albeit as a cost. Others might welcome the ability to break their island up, especially as you can eventually build bridges and reshape rivers - so, again, it's a personal choice. If you want the vast majority of your island's buildings on one landmass rather than several, you'll probably want an island design where the rivers are less intrusive. Next, consider the river placement when compared to your long term plans. Just be aware that it'll become the central hub of your island life once it becomes more bustling and busy. That's different for everyone - some might want resident services as close to the middle of the island as possible. The main thing you should worry about is the location of Resident Services and the airport make sure the layout has them in a position where you'll be comfortable with their location in relation to where you might place your tent, which will later become the plot of your house. That's okay! Here's what to think about first and foremost. But you still aren't sure what to do with your first island pick. Okay, so - you understand the above disclaimers. Things to consider when choosing an island shape We recommend you pick a layout you like and not worry too much about min/maxing your island choice. Don't worry about things like the location of rocks, as every few days rocks will shatter under your shovel or axe, at which point a new one will spawn in a new location the next day.Įvery island type has everything you need at every stage of the game. This is a new sort of 'gated' progression to the earliest stages of Animal Crossing New Horizons, but each island layout has access to the same basic things at each stage, meaning - we reiterate - that there is no 'best' island style. Then, later, you'll unlock the means to create a ladder to clamber the inclines. Pretty quickly you'll craft a means to cross over the rivers to unlock another chunk of the island which will give you access to more of the same. This means you'll have everything you need to gather resources to do some crafting. So that means initially you'll have access to a chunk of the island that features the town square and resident services tent, the airport, a good amount of beach, a bunch of trees and some rocks. This isn't a cop-out let us explain.Īs we say above, every island layout has the same basic setup. In fact, pretty much every island is equal. Okay, so, here comes the kicker, the thing that in your heart of hearts you probably know is coming: in Animal Crossing New Horizons there is no 'best' island layout that you absolutely must choose. That doesn't mean it's necessarily the best one for you, however. For what it's worth, we picked the island layout in the very bottom right of the image above. Rivers will follow different routes and raised areas of land will be in different places, however. Resident Services and the area that will eventually develop into your town square is marked on the map with the Animal Crossing leaf symbol, and the airport will be on the grey, rocky area directly below it, or near enough to it. What differs is placement - these buildings and resources will appear in different places. It's important to note that all islands will have the same basic resources - trees, stones, natural flowers and basic starter buildings like Resident Services and the Airport are always present. As you can see, the island layouts vary in a number of ways. The best part of this semiprivate diving experience was that we all accomplished all that in just a few hours and were back in time for a leisurely lunch at the Montage, which was quite the feat, as a two-dive experience in Los Cabos usually takes up most of the day. Once I hopped on to that nearby boat, we went to two dive sites, where we found sea turtles, whitetip sharks, and spotted eagle rays. It was a wonderful change from the usual dive experience in Cabo, which involves early bus pickups, bumpy (and often long) drives to a marina dive shop, gearing up there to finally board the boat to go out for the dives, and then a repeat of that time-consuming ritual on the return. Having their own on-property dive shop meant that I was outfitted right on the beach at the tentlike shop with all the scuba gear I needed, then ferried via dinghy right out into the bay, where the dive boat was anchored. On my 2021 visit to the resort, I discovered that the diving experience was truly first class there. Much newer on the Cabo scene is the ultra-modern Montage Los Cabos Resort, which was built in 2018 on the Bahia Santa Maria, a small, protected beach bay that offers an idyllic setting - including swimming, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, and direct access to its scuba-diving boat. The Montage opened in 2018 and is one of Cabo's newer hotels. Here are 11 of my favorite places to stay, priced across the board. All have pools - some are incredibly beautiful, too - but if getting in the ocean is an important part of your vacation experience, there are a limited number of places with swimmable beaches, so choose wisely. Note that many of the Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo resorts do not have swimmable beaches because of the rip currents and rocky shores. But there are still less expensive places to stay, and venturing beyond Cabo San Lucas to La Paz is a smart way to save money and have an equally grand vacation. Visitors should know that Cabo San Lucas skews to the higher end of the price ranges these days. While gorgeous villa rentals are definitely an integral part of the modern Cabo experience (see Cabo Platinum below, for instance), there is still a good variety of accommodations to be had in Baja California Sur. It's pretty clear things in Los Cabos have changed over the years when you hear that it's the place where the side-by-side Cabo "Casamigos" villas that George Clooney and his power-couple pals Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber built together in 2009 and sold for $100 million in 2016. It's just the nature of the Cabo beast, as over the years, it's become a playground for the ultrarich and very famous. Now, that's the price for a low-end hotel with basic rooms and few amenities. When I began exploring the region, even the most posh resorts cost no more than $300 a night. I've been traveling several times a year to Los Cabos and Baja California Sur for nearly 30 years, first on a travel-writing assignment and later on many more trips, some to do research for more articles about new places there and others just to have fun with friends.
